Going out in style has a price

Sunday, August 07, 2005
John Campanelli
Plain Dealer Reporter

When asked, funeral homes are required by law to give consumers an itemized general price list.

PDQ went to a sampling of local funeral homes and obtained GPLs. Here’s the range of prices — and some interesting charges.

Basic services fee (overhead usually added to the final cost of the funeral) — $1,040 to $1,960

Caskets — $195 to $26,000

Outer burial containers — *$550 to $17,275

Urns — $135 to $3,000

Embalming — $420 to $675

Washing and “disinfection” when there is no embalming — $65 to $325

Hairdressing — $35 to $65

Hearse — $175 to $275

Clothing — $65 to $300

Underwear — $15 to $22

Slippers — $20 to $25

Coffee service during viewing — $50

Fee for dressing and casketing — $50 to $250
